The system continuously monitors the NOAA Severe Weather Data Inventory (SWDI) and NWS Alerts API for qualifying hail events – storms producing hail of 1.0 inch or larger across the United States. When a qualifying event is detected, StormSnipe cross-references the NWS warning polygon against the US National Address Database (a geocoded dataset of approximately 80 million residential addresses maintained by the US Department of Transportation) using PostGIS spatial intersection.
