Whitwell, TN is experiencing a hail-producing storm on September 21, 2026, with radar-detected hail reaching 2.22" and tracking through the metro. The system is continuing to produce hail and intermittent severe-weather alerts.

What Happened

The storm first prompted alerts in mid-afternoon and has remained active into the evening. NWS alerts for the Whitwell metro were issued between 1:26 PM CDT and 8:54 PM CDT. Twenty separate alerts were issued during that interval. Twelve of those included dual-polarization radar indications of hail. Eight were issued on the basis of NWS warning products without dual-polarization radar signatures.

Radar-estimated hail sizes reported during the alert sequence ranged from 0.75" to 1.76" before later processing identified a larger peak. Alerts concentrated in late afternoon and early evening as the cell tracked northeast through the metro. The storm continues to be monitored on radar and remains active over the area.

Damage Assessment

Hail that exceeds the golf-ball threshold (1.75") and approaches baseball size (2.75") carries a higher risk to exposed materials. In Whitwell residential neighborhoods, roofing with older or composite asphalt shingles is at elevated risk of shingle bruising and granule loss. Vehicle body panels and unprotected glass are at risk of dents and breakage. Exterior HVAC units, soft-side siding, and skylights in the immediate hail track are particularly vulnerable.

Where hail fell in heavier concentrations, look for concentrated dent patterns on metal roofing, shattered panes or cracked glazing, and concentrated shingle damage along windward roof slopes. No field reports of widespread catastrophic structural collapse are included in the alert set at this time. Inspections should focus first on areas along the mapped storm path and under the highest radar-estimated returns.
