A severe hail storm tracked through Campo, Colorado on the night of August 6–7, 2026, producing 3.06-inch hail and multiple radar-detected hail cores.
Storm activity began in the Campo area late on August 6 and continued into the early hours of August 7. The National Weather Service issued 12 alerts tied to this storm between 7:32 PM MDT on August 6 and 1:40 AM MDT on August 7. Several alerts were based on dual-polarization radar hail detection. Several others were issued as NWS warnings without corresponding radar-derived returns.
Dual-polarization NEXRAD hail detection flagged repeated cores over and northwest of Campo. Early alerts at 7:32 PM MDT and 8:22 PM MDT were radar-detected. Later in the sequence, radar again detected intensified cores after midnight. The NWS also issued multiple warnings at times when radar returns were weaker, reflecting the evolving threat window across the region.
A spotter-verified photo posted at 8:30 PM MDT showed hail roughly the size of half dollars near the town. That ground-level observation aligns with the early radar-detected pulses that passed directly over the populated area. The storm then tracked on a generally northwestward vector out of the immediate town area while maintaining intermittent hail-producing cores.
NWS Local Storm Reports list a single spotter-verified photo of half-dollar-size hail near Campo at 8:30 PM MDT. No additional local storm reports documenting structural collapse, confirmed vehicle total losses, or widespread property destruction were filed with the NWS for this event.
Radar-detected hail cores later in the event were spatially offset from the initial spotter location. Those radar cores indicate concentrated hail activity along a narrow swath passing northwest of town during the post-midnight period. Field evidence is limited to the spotter photo inside the town perimeter and to radar returns along that northwest track.
Because surface damage reports are sparse, observed impacts are currently limited to the photographed hail accumulation and isolated, field-level effects consistent with stones of the size in the spotter image. Claims and contractor crews operating in the area should expect variability in surface impact along the radar-indicated track. Some parcels inside town saw half-dollar-size stones; areas along the radar core northwest of town experienced stronger returns but lack matching ground-truth reports at this time.
Prioritize inspections in two corridors. First, canvass the immediate Campo town area where the spotter photo originated. Inspect parked vehicles, porch furniture, and exposed siding for denting and broken glazing. Photograph locations with timestamped images that include the street or landmark for claim documentation.

Pay special attention to skylights, solar panels, and irrigation equipment oriented toward open fields.
