A severe hail storm tracked through Buffalo, Missouri on August 6, 2026, producing stones up to 3.25 inches and generating a sequence of radar-detected and spotter-verified reports in the late afternoon and early evening.
The event produced 28 NWS alerts across the Buffalo metro and surrounding counties between mid-afternoon and the pre-dawn hours. Dual-polarization radar first detected hail signatures near 2:17 PM CDT and continued to flag hail-sized returns through the evening, interspersed with NWS warning-only issuances and multiple spotter confirmations. Spotters reported a cluster of large stones near West Plains at 4:40 PM CDT, with repeated local storm reports citing hail up to 3 inches in diameter at that time. Additional spotter reports recorded hen-egg size hail around 5:00 PM CDT and golf-ball size hail near 4:45 PM CDT. Radar-detected hail signals at 3:09 PM CDT and again at 7:05 PM CDT aligned with those spotter observations, while NWS warning-only alerts filled gaps where no immediate ground reports were available. Smaller but persistent hail continued to be tracked into the early morning hours of August 7, including radar detections and late spotter reports near Jasper at 7:57 PM CDT.
Field reports and radar returns show concentrated surface impacts in and around West Plains, Jasper, and pockets within the Buffalo metro. The West Plains spotter cluster at 4:40 PM CDT documented multiple 3-inch observations. Separate spotter reports at 5:00 PM CDT recorded hail of roughly 2 inches, and several reports around 4:45 PM CDT noted golf-ball and half-dollar sized hail. Quarter- and penny-sized hail were reported earlier and later in the sequence, indicating spatial variability across the storm track. Those ground observations match radar-detected hail signatures that persisted for several hours, suggesting areas of repeated exposure rather than a single short-lived pulse. Local NWS warnings accompanied many of the radar detections and spotter reports. On-the-ground reports did not include granular inventories of property damage; however the concentration of larger stones in West Plains and adjacent points of verification indicate where roof and vehicle examinations should begin.
Inspect West Plains and the closest Buffalo metro neighborhoods first. Multiple spotter reports at 4:40 PM CDT in West Plains documented 3-inch stones, and nearby reports show 1.5–2.0-inch hail during the same late-afternoon window. Prioritize visible shingle fracture, bowed metal panels, dented siding, and concentrated impact patterns on south- and west-facing exposures that faced the incoming storm. Use a scale in every photo and capture a reference object or ruler to document hail size alongside time-stamped images.
Document chain-of-evidence tied to the event timeline. Reference spotter times such as 4:40 PM CDT for the West Plains 3-inch observations and 4:45–5:15 PM CDT for the golf-ball and hen-egg reports when you prepare estimates and file claims.
